prone 是个形容词，表示 likely to do something or suffer from something「易于……的，有……倾向的」，尤其是负面类的事情。经常用于两个固定搭配，一是 be prone to sth，二是 be prone to do sth，相当于 tend to do sth。2022 年 6 月的六级完形中，prone 不仅是选项之一，而且是正确答案。这句话就用到了第一个短语。

beef 是让人食指大动的「牛肉」，不过你晓得伐，牛肉能跳起来，变成「动词」，表示 to complain a lot「爱发牢骚，抱怨」。然而，当它和 up 结缘，就又变了。beef up 表示 to make sth bigger, better, more interesting, etc.「加强，改进」。所以很多时候我们可以用它换掉常用的 improve。比如 beef up security「加强安全」。2018 年英一考研阅读还专门出了一道题，让大家结合文意猜测 beef up 是什么意思。
